FindWebsitesForSale.com is the creation of Michael Muscarella and is one of several owned through his company, Movers N Shippers LLC. Early in 2008, Michael decided to sell a site he had owned since 2003. In fact, it was the first website he had ever owned. Muscarella used several “website for sale” websites to advertise this fantastic opportunity. He found that most of the sites he used fell into one of three categories:
- Totally free site (some loaded with adult sites)
- Pay up front (anywhere from $5-$40)
- Pay upon sale (often 10% or more)
Michael’s first attempt was unsuccessful. The offers he had received were ridiculously low and he refused to settle. After a couple of months, Michael decided to list it again. This time, he got a far better response and was able to sell it to someone who realized the value of his site. Michael’s total expense in advertising the site for sale was around $60. As this was far less than 1% of the sales price, Michael was happy. He was paid immediately and the site was completely transferred to the new owner in less than a week. He realized that it must not always be that easy.
What if the time on the ad ran out before the site was sold, as it had the first time around? What if the buyer had backed out? What if the site didn’t sell and he was out $60 with no results?
Michael decided to create a site that addressed the issues above. He would offer an auction with durations of up to 3 months, giving the seller plenty of time. He would offer a free listing to everyone, but would offer sellers the opportunity to upgrade their auction for a minimal fee in order to gain more exposure. He would work to keep the adult sites off, making his site more attractive to serious buyers.
He would have sellers list information that was important to potential buyers. Information such as visitors, revenue and revenue sources would be readily available to buyers. In addition to selling, Michael decided to allow users to list their website or domain up for lease.
